Women everywhere are taking control of their birth experiences, and taking responsibility for their lives and health without involving themselves in the medical healthcare arena. It's your body and your decision!

I am quite happy to attend an unassisted birth having been 'invited' to do so by the pregnant woman and/or her partner.  I will endeavor to emotionally support the woman and the family throughout the birth and after, in the role of Doula.  I am unable ‘legally or professionally’ to assist or advise in the birthing. However, I firmly believe that we all should have freedom of choice, and I would prefer a woman 'invites' me to be around her as support during her birthing, then have her feel she is unable to ask and is alone.......... talk to me!

I also believe that people are competent to make their own healthcare and childrearing decisions and should be encouraged to do so.  Whereas mainstream allopathic medicine encourages us to make no decisions about our health without first consulting a medical doctor, I affirm that each person has the right to make informed decisions about their health without first engaging in such a consultation.  Not only is all the information available to physicians in the form of textbooks, medical journals, etc. available to the average person if they choose to avail themselves of such information, but each person's intuition provides them with an important and sound basis for making decisions.  I feel that people should be empowered to feel competent to care for themselves rather than making them feel that they must rely upon an "expert."

However, the Law does have clear lines as to my place within an Unassisted Birth. If I am to support the mother and family, I would appreciate if the following paragraph was read.

Thank you

Attendance by unqualified persons at childbirth

The Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001, Part 9 Article 44 explains that it is illegal for an unqualified person to undertake the role of a registered midwife. Article 45 further explains that no person other than a registered midwife or a registered medical practitioner shall attend a woman in childbirth (assume responsibility) unless in an emergency or in supported recognised training.

An unqualified person is an individual who gives medical or midwifery care but may not lawfully do so. This unqualified person may include a non registered midwife, doula, nurse, the partner, relative or a friend who is not a registered midwife or registered doctor. They may be present during childbirth but must not assume responsibility, assist or assume the role of the medical practitioner or registered midwife or give midwifery or medical care in childbirth. This is unlawful and may incur sanctions and a conviction.
