Why a Doula? |
The word doula comes from the Greek for a woman who serves another woman. It has now come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth who provides sustained physical and emotional advice and support to a woman and her partner before, during and immediately after childbirth. |

Woman
have the right to say how they would wish their pregnancy and birth to be,
and those wishes should hold more respect than maybe they are doing so at
present. As
a Doula I aim to give the woman the support to have the pregnancy birth
and post natal care she wishes for herself and her baby/babies. I can give complete commitment, care and emotional support to each of my mothers and their family, helping them to have the birthing experience they truly want for themselves.
The medicalization of normal pregnancy , coupled with the time and resource constraints imposed upon woman within ‘the system’, has led to a foreshortening of what nature intended. This often results in unnecessary complications and a less than satisfactory birth experience, often denying the woman any opportunity to touch base with their instincts. |
It
is clear that how we are born sets up patterns that may have life long
implications for our state of health and our human potential.
Unfortunately, most people, including health care professionals, have
inherited a culturally ingrained fear and distrust of a woman’s innate
ability to give birth normally, a belief that has resulted, in part, from
observing the adverse birth outcomes that are so common when frightened,
anxious, and vulnerable woman are not supported and empowered to birth
normally. By
Michel Odent. A
doula can help a woman to find the right way for her to birth, give her
back that empowered feeling. |
